Südtirol / Verona

South Tyrol (Südtirol), also known by its Italian name Alto Adige, is an province in northern Italy. The majority of the population is of Austro-Bavarian heritage and speaks German. Around a quarter of the population speak Italian as their first language, mainly concentrated in and around the two largest cities (Bolzano and Merano). South Tyrol is a region abounding with contrasts, between Mediterranean landscape and Alpine peaks, deeply rooted tradition and cosmopolitan curiosity. The allure of South Tyrol lies in its variety and the harmony of opposites. The highest peak is the Ortler (3,905 m) in the far west, which is also the highest peak in the Eastern Alps outside the Bernina Range.

Shakespeare placed star-crossed lovers Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet in Verona for good reason: romance, drama and fatal family feuding have been the city's hallmark for centuries. Compact and easy to navigate, Verona remains one of Italy’s most underrated cities despite its picturesque center of cobblestone streets lined with medieval pink-hued buildings, well-preserved Roman sites and dozens of churches. Traditionally *THE BALCONY* is what everyone thinks of in connection with Verona. Of course there is plenty more to see and do in Verona, e.g. the famous amphitheatre is a must. Food is fairly cheap and this can be done on a budget quite comfortably.
And yes, it’s one of the most beautiful cities in Italy… and every bit as romantic as you’d expect!
